Simon Erland
(British, b. 1961)

Born in 1961, Erland was educated at Westminster City School and Kings College London, before studying as a postgraduate at the Sir John Cass School of Art. Both of his parents are artists, and their friends have included some of the major 20th century artists such as Henry Moore, Jacob Epstein and Anthony Caro.

Erland began exhibiting briefly at the Sladmore Gallery in London, before succeeding John Skeaping as gallery artist at Arthur Ackerman & Son in 1984 and exhibited there every year until the demise of that gallery at the end of 1992. Since then he has exhibited with the Bruton Street Gallery and Frank T. Sabin in London. He has exhibited in over 26 major group exhibitions since 1980 including regularly at the Royal Academy of Arts in London, where he has been the only artist to exhibit horses regularly since John Skeaping's retrospective there in 1980, at the Royal Glasgow Institute and internationally. His work has been collected all over Europe, North America, Japan, Australia, Hong Kong, and Pakistan and can be found in several major collections.

Erland is principally known for his horses, especially those of the Spanish Riding School. He is little known for racing work, however, in the last 5 years he has made a series of over 60 portraits of racehorses up to 1/3 life size, of some of the best post-war racehorses from Sir Ivor and Nijinsky, Secretariat and Dancing Brave, Arazi and Generous. Erland has had major exhibitions in London, New York, Madrid and Lexington, KY.
